In the world of sports and athletic performance, understanding the body's energy systems is crucial. These systems dictate how we perform, recover, and improve. For athletes and coaches, knowledge of these systems highlights the importance of glucose replenishment to sustain energy and enhance performance. Let's delve into each energy system to understand their roles and why glucose is vital.

The ATP-PC System

The ATP-PC system powers short, explosive movements. It's the first responder when quick bursts of energy are needed, like in sprints or heavy lifts. This system relies on stored phosphocreatine and provides immediate energy for up to 10 seconds.

The Lactic Acid System

When activities last beyond the initial burst, the glycolytic system takes over. It breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, providing energy for activities lasting up to three minutes. It does not require oxygen and thus build up lactate and hydrogen ion which cause fatigue. This system is crucial for sports that require short, intense efforts in quick succession.

The Aerobic System

For endurance events, the oxidative system is key. It uses oxygen to convert carbohydrates and fats into energy, supporting prolonged activities like marathons. While fat storage is practically limitless, carbohydrates storage may only support activities last for 90 minutes. Thus, it underscores the importance of maintaining glucose levels by carbohydrates replenishment for sustained performance, especially when (1) the activities last for over 90 minutes, (2) there are two training sessions in a day, and (3) there is a hard session ahead.

By understanding these systems, athletes and coaches can optimize training and nutrition strategies, emphasizing the need for effective glucose replenishment to fuel peak performance.
